Meet Dr C Thompson

About Dr C Thompson

Dr C Thompson is a specialist spinal neurosurgeon. He studied in Durban, Cape Town and the United Kingdom and has accumulated experience in the management of complex spine pathology, including degenerative spinal conditions, trauma of the spinal column and spinal cord, infections of the spine and tumours of the spinal column and spinal cord.

His private practice is based at the Mediclinic Milnerton and he provides part-time neurosurgical support at Groote Schuur Hospital.

Academic Experience

Dr Crispin Thompson completed his medical training at the University of the Orange Free State in 1998. Intern and Community Service training was completed at Greys Hospital in Pietermaritzburg and Mosvold Hospital in rural northern KwaZulu-Natal respectively. He then worked in the Emergency Medicine facilities in Durban before starting his neurosurgery training at the Wentworth Hospital in Durban in 2002. In 2004 an opportunity arose to gain further emergency medical experience working in the Accident and Emergency Department on the Isle of Man.
In 2006 Dr Crispin Thompson returned to Cape Town and completed his neurosurgery training at the Groote Schuur Hospital. During this period, he developed a keen interest in the management of spine pathology and concentrated his efforts on acquiring invaluable experience in this particular sphere of neurosurgery. Following graduating as a Fellow of the College of Neurosurgeons of South Africa in 2010, an additional year of post-specialisation training in the various aspects of neurosurgery was obtained at the Leeds General Infirmary in the United Kingdom. Dr Crispin Thompson worked as a Consultant Spinal Neurosurgeon at the Leeds General Infirmary before once again returning to South Africa at the end of 2013.

Work Experience

In 2014 Dr Crispin Thompson took up the position of Consultant Spinal Neurosurgeon at Groote Schuur Hospital with the purpose of providing a comprehensive service within the state sector and furthering the training opportunities within the University of Cape Town Department of Neurosurgery. The need for a Spinal Neurosurgeon at Milnerton Mediclinic resulted in the commencement of a limited private practice being established in late 2015. The growing private practice responsibilities and a growing Groote Schuur team culminated in full-time private practice in 2018.

Dr Crispin Thompson is still employed within the Department of Neurosurgery as a part-time consultant where he provides both operative and clinical support at Groote Schuur Hospital.

Patient’s Testimonials

“I am forever grateful to Dr Crispin Thompson for what he, with his medical knowledge, achieved with my back. I have never had any back pain since my accident.”

– Philip

“Dr Thompson is very approachable and knowledgeable. He is prepared to spend time going into great detail explaining what the problem is, how to fix it and about the surgical procedure. Dr Thompson spent time explaining to my wife how the surgery had gone and putting her mind at rest. She told me later that she had felt greatly comforted.

– Ian

“Dr Thompson was my medical support structure through my healing. We forged a bond that I learnt to rely on to retain my positive outlook. I think his transparency with regards to what and why this happened to me, his positive feedback and support played a major part in my recovery. I would never have been able to do this without his support and patience. Thank you Dr Thompson.”

– Belinda
